Jackson to endorse Discbaby globally

Nien Made Enterprises Co., a leading producer of plastic and aluminum blinds, announced June 17 that it will make a major thrust into the electronics market.

The Taiwan company has revealed that international pop star Michael Jackson will endorse its video disk player currently on the market. Also, the firm has unveiled a plan to invest US$35.84 million to produce an advanced Digital Versatile Disc player.

The company has contracted Jackson to become the global spokesman for its Esonic Video Discbaby. The singer will be featured in the product's commercials and his image will appear on the Discbaby's packaging.

The agreement with Jackson marks the first time that an international superstar has been contracted to promote a Taiwan-made product. As such, news of the pact opened eyes in Taiwan's manufacturing sector.

Nien Made now expects its Discbaby to rival a similar video CD produced by Philips for the leadership of the domestic market. The Taiwan company is promoting its product as "portable, very cute and of good image and sound quality." The Discbaby can play compact laser disks as well as video disks. Also, it can serve as a karaoke machine.

The company has targeted Discbaby sales of 3,000 to 5,000 units per month in the Taiwan market, representing between US$2.36 million and US$3.94 million in revenues.

After a successful launch of its new product in the domestic market, Nien Made plans to distribute the Discbaby globally in the first quarter of 1998.

Jackson agreed to sign on as the Discbaby's spokesman after becoming impressed by a video CD player that he purchased in a Taipei store during a visit to Taiwan last year.

The Discbaby represents the second product currently being promoted by Jackson, as he endorses Pepsi as well.

Nien Made was enthusiastic about acquiring the services of a person as globally renowned as Jackson. But the company stressed that there is more to successful marketing than simply putting a famous face on the package.
