I was privileged today to attend an exclusive playback of the new remixes from Michael Jackson's upcoming Thriller 25 release, at the Sony BMG offices in London.
Unfortunately there was no one on hand to answer some of the more detailed questions I had to ask, but I was able to get some basic information about the release, and listened to 3 runs of the new remixes of "The Girl is Mine", with will.i.am, "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'", with Akon, and the remastered, "For All Time" - the Kanye West version of Billie Jean was unavailable.
The Demo Disc
THE RELEASE
There are 4 different versions of the release - the standard version, which comes with 2 different sets of at work ("Zombie" and "Classic"), and a more expensive hard-bond, 'book-style' "Deluxe" version, which will be limited to 1 european run (of which the UK should get about 20,000). These come with the audio disc, and DVD, and will feature a nice holographic cover.
Also, a 12" vinyl will be available as a gatefold double LP.
These will be produced into next year, and after that point 'Thriller 25' will be available as a "standard" album, without the DVD, featuring the classic cover.
THE SINGLE
As we all know by now, will.i.am's "The Girl is Mine" will be the single released from the edition -- it will be out for digital purchase January 14, and available on CD 2 weeks later. It will feature 3 tracks, one of which may be a demo (though this is as of yet unconfirmed). There are no more details available on the contents of the single.
A video is as of yet unconfirmed, and from what I made out, nothing like this is in the pipeline just yet.
WORLDWIDE ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN
In Sony's presser, they've touted a "worldwide advertising campaign" to launch the release, and they're going the full mile with this - TV advertisements, billboards, posters. We can expect TV ads the Sunday before release, and they've plenty more ideas in mind to do some unique things to launch.
Radio play should take place at least a couple of weeks before launch, so we may have some of these blasting out of our speakers in just a months time.
THE SONGS
The Girl is Mine (running time: 3m12s)
will.i.am's exciting version of "The Girl is Mine" features a funky, bassful hip-hop styled beat, that Will might very describe as being a "club banger". Noteworthy is its use of what might very well be a trash can, giving it a truly unique sound.
This track is much more than a classic remix - Will and Michael have made it a song in its own right, with Will accompanying Michael on the chorus, following "the girl is mine...", with a rhythmic "she mine, she mine" -- and "don't waste your time...", with "your time, your time". Will also interjects with rap-styled vocals: "She likes the way I rock, the-way-I-rock".
Paul McCartney is nowhere to be found on this track, with Will playing "the other guy", who instead of bickering with Michael (as in the classic track), makes a "comeback" with a rap verse nearing the end. The song is more collaborative than the original, which features Michael and Paul arguing back and fourth -- in this version Will is very much a part of Michael's vocals, and vice versa.
You're going to notice a different cut of vocals from Michael for this track. They're not brand-new, though some of the ad-libs questionably may very well be, though it's hard to discern considering the thousands of vocal cuts that must exist in Michael's collection. It's very exciting to hear though, because brand-new or not, they're still new, in that they're being released for the first time just now.
All in all it's an excellent track that you won't be able to resist the urge to bob your head to. The hard beat and funky sounds, accompanied by Michael's incredible vocals and Will's unique rap style are undoubtably going to put it on the top of the club charts.
Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' (running time: 4m14s)
The big question everyone has been asking is: Is this the same song I've heard on YouTube? The answer: Yes. Sorta.
Akon's vocals are very much the same as the "leaked" version, which I'd have to assume is a demo. The actual Thriller 25 version is much fuller, and features some of Michael's classic vocals, and a verse from the original song.
It doesn't seem to contain any different vocals from Michael, unlike "The Girl is Mine", though Michael's verse seems to start off a little 'differently' and yet immediately reverts back to the way I've heard it a thousand times. This may be something to do with the mixing, or perhaps they included that little twist just to give it a fresher sound.
It's generally a very smooth track, with a nice piano accompaniment, and what might just be an extremely soft backing by Michael, though it's hard to tell. "Mamma say mama sah ma ma ku sah" features a heavy, hard bass sound, that's sure to knock off a few pictures from the wall at full blast - it's bit of an escape from the underlying soulful sound, which slowly evaporates into what one can only describe as a dance track.
Overall I think it's a great song, but this is probably dependent on your taste for Akon. If you don't like Akon you're not going to like this track, plain and simple - a decision which I know many have made already!
For All Time (running time: 4m4s)
"For All Time" was leaked at least a year, maybe 2 years ago, and this version is not much different, but it is different. Clearly it has been remastered for this release, with a much crisper, clearer sound, bringing out Michael's vocals far more than the "original".
It features a different bridge than the one we all know, more vocal than the original, which most likely is from another cut. If you're a fan of this track already, then you're going to love this version, which sounds more fuller and more complete, but is still very much the same.

Ah,vale,se confirma que la versión deluxe tendrá 20mil copias disponibles en UK,por lo tanto a España le corresponderán otras tantas,vamos que no me quedo sin mi thriller deluxe

Por lo que he podido leer,Paul de MJno dice que el remix de 'the girl is mine' es buenisimo y que tiene nuevas voces de MJ,que no sabe si son nuevas o antiguas pero son nunca escuchadas al fin y al cabo.Gran noticia

Basicamente dice q The girl is mine es como una cancion nueva...cambiando el ritmo, la letra...no se oye a Paul...y q Michael canta cosas diferentes aunke no se puede decir q su voz sea la actual o q hayan usado voces antiguas d MJ
Wanna be startin something dice q es la q ya se habia escuchado d Akon (yo aun no la he oido) y q si t gusta Akon t gustara la cancion y si no no...
For all time...dice q se nota la remasterizacion, la voz d MJ suena mas clara...el puente es diferente, la cancion esta como mas terminada...me alegro pq me encanta For all time.

No se que es lo que pinta un cover de Akon en la reedición del album mas vendido de la historia de la música :novale: Este tio debe de estar flipando en colores con la suerte que ha tenido de que a Michael se le haya ido la olla incluyendole ahi. Me da mucha rabia que ocupe una canción en vez de incluir alguna inédita más. Yo me compraré la edición deluxe si puedo pero vamos, porque está "For all time" y por el libreto y el dvd (que será mi primer dvd de MJ ya que todo lo que tengo está en vhs original). De cualquier forma, sigo diciendo que es una oportunidad mal aprovechada de hacer algo grande.

He visto el perfil, y fue creado en junio del 2005, y el video de Thriller subido hace 2 años. Según el perfil, Michael entró a YouTube hace 7 horas:cuñao, y desde el 2005 mucho interés en YouTube no ha puesto, solamente ha visto un video:cuñao:cuñao.
Sí que parece el canal oficial, como así lo indica. Está bastante currado.
Como curiosidad, el video más visto es Thriller con 3,7 millones, seguido de You Rock My World con 1,1 millones, y el último es Liberian Girl con 62000.

Tuve el privilegio de atender en exclusiva a una audición de los nuevos remixes de Thriller 25, en las oficinas de Sony de Londres.
Desafortunadamente, no había nadie que pudiera contestarme algunas de las cuestiones más concretas que tenía que hacerles, pero fui capaz de obtener información básica sobre el lanzamiento, y escuché 3 de los nuevos remixes de "The Girl is Mine", con Will I Am, "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'", con Akon, y la remasterizada, "For All Time" - la versión de Kanye West de Billie Jean no estaba disponible
El disco demo
EL LANZAMIENTO
Hay 4 versiones diferentes del disco - la edición estándar, que viene con 2 sets diferentes ("Zombie" y "Classic"), y una más cara [hard-bond no sé lo que significa, lo siento], una versión "estilo-libro" "Deluxe", que será limitada a una tirada europea (de la cual UK tendría sobre 20.000). Estos vienen con el CD de audio, y DVD, y tendrán una portada olográfica muy chula.
Además, un vinilo 12" estará disponible como un doble LP desplegable.
Estos serán producidos el año próximo, y después de este punto 'Thriller 25' estará disponible como un album estándar, sin el DVD, con la portada clásica.

En Sony's presser (supongo que será el departamento de prensa, pero averigua), han tratado vender (have touted que yo sepa es tratar de vender) una "campaña publicitaria a nivel mundial" para lanzar el trabajo, y van a dar todo por ello -anuncios de televisión, billboards, posters. Podemos esperar anuncios en TV el domingo anterior al lanzamiento, y tienen un montón de ideas más en mente para hacer cosas únicas al lanzarlo.
La emisión en radio tendrá lugar al menos un par de semanas antes al lanzamiento, por lo que podríamos tener algo de esta explosión dejando habladurías a un lado en unos pocos meses.
LOS SINGLES
The Girl is Mine (duración: 3m12s)
La excitante versión de "The girl is Mine" de Will.i.am's contiene una base funky, con un beat al estilo hip-hop, que Will podría describir como un "rompepistas". Noteworthy is its use of what might very well be a trash can (ni idea de cómo traducir esto xD), dandole un sonido verdaderamente único.
Este track es algo más que un remix clásico - Will y Michael lo han convertido en una canción en sí misma, con Will acompañando a Michael en los coros, siguiendo "the girl is mine...", con un rítmico "she mine, she mine" -- y "don't waste your time...", con "your time, your time". Will además introduce voces al estilo rap: "She likes the way I rock, the-way-I-rock".
Paul McCartney no aparece en ningún lado, con Will haciendo el papel de "el otro tío", quien en vez de competir con Michael (como en el track original), hace un "regreso" con un verso rap cerca del final. La canción es más colaborativa que la original, en la que Michael y Paul discuten -- en esta versión Will es más una parte de las voces de Michael, y viceversa.
Os vais a dar cuenta de que hay un corte de voces diferentes de Michael para este track. No son nuevos, aunque algunos de los improvisados podría discutirse si lo son o no y bien podrían serlo, pero es dificil discerner con los miles de registros vocales que existen en la colección de Michael. Aún así es muy excitante oirlo, porque nuevos o no, aún así son técnicamente nuevos, en el sentido de que van a ser editados por primera vez ahora.
En general es un track excelente al que no os podreis resistir. La base fuerte y el sonido funky, acompañado por los increíbles vocals de Michael y el estilo único en rap de Will van a ponerlo sin dudas en el top de las listas de los clubs (discotecas, no de pilinguis, que os conozco).
Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' (duración: 4m14s)
La gran pregunta que todo el mundo se está haciendo: ¿Es la misma canción que hemos oído en youtube? La respuesta: Sí. Parecida.
Las voces de Akon son muchas las mismas que las de la versión colgada, que asumo debe ser una demo. La versión real de Thriller 25 es más completa, y tiene algunas de las voces clásicas de Michael, y un verso de la canción original.
No parece contener ningun vocal nuevo de Michael, a diferencia de "The Girl is Mine", aunque el verso de Michael parece empezar algo "diferente" inmediatamente vuelve a la manera en que la he oido miles de veces. Puede ser que tenga algo que ver con la remezcla, o quizá lo incluyeron para darle un sonido más fresco.
En general es un track tranquilo, con un agradable acompañamiento de piano, y que podría tener unos coros extremadamente bajos de Michael, aunque es dificil de decir. "Mamma say mama sah ma ma ku sah" tiene una base fuerte, seguro que para tirar algunas fotos de la pared si lo pones a todo volumen - es un poco como un escape al sonido soul, que lentamente se evapora hacia algo que uno sólo puede describir como un track bailable.
En conjunto creo que es una gran canción, pero probablemente dependa de vuestra opinión sobre Akon. Si no os gusta Akon no os va a gustar este track, así de simple -¡una decisión que ya sé que muchos ya han tomado!
For All Time (duración: 4m4s)
"For All Time" fue filtrado hace uno o dos años, y esta versión no es muy diferente, pero es diferente. Claramente ha sido remasterizada para la ocasión, con un sonido más claro y fresco, mostrando más la voz de Michael que la original.
Contiene un puente diferente al que todos conocemos, con más voz que en la original, que es más como un corte diferente. Si ya eres fan de esta canción, entonces te va a encantar esta canción, que suena más completa, pero es aún así casi la misma.

La excitante versión de "The girl is Mine" de Will.i.am's contiene una base funky, con un beat al estilo hip-hop, que Will podría describir como un "rompepistas". Noteworthy is its use of what might very well be a trash can (ni idea de cómo traducir esto xD), dandole un sonido verdaderamente único.
Este track es algo más que un remix clásico - Will y Michael lo han convertido en una canción en sí misma, con Will acompañando a Michael en los coros, siguiendo "the girl is mine...", con un rítmico "she mine, she mine" -- y "don't waste your time...", con "your time, your time". Will además introduce voces al estilo rap: "She likes the way I rock, the-way-I-rock".
Paul McCartney no aparece en ningún lado, con Will haciendo el papel de "el otro tío", quien en vez de competir con Michael (como en el track original), hace un "regreso" con un verso rap cerca del final. La canción es más colaborativa que la original, en la que Michael y Paul discuten -- en esta versión Will es más una parte de las voces de Michael, y viceversa.
Os vais a dar cuenta de que hay un corte de voces diferentes de Michael para este track. No son nuevos, aunque algunos de los improvisados podría discutirse si lo son o no y bien podrían serlo, pero es dificil discerner con los miles de registros vocales que existen en la colección de Michael. Aún así es muy excitante oirlo, porque nuevos o no, aún así son técnicamente nuevos, en el sentido de que van a ser editados por primera vez ahora.
En general es un track excelente al que no os podreis resistir. La base fuerte y el sonido funky, acompañado por los increíbles vocals de Michael y el estilo único en rap de Will van a ponerlo sin dudas en el top de las listas de los clubs (discotecas, no de pilinguis, que os conozco).
Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' (duración: 4m14s)
La gran pregunta que todo el mundo se está haciendo: ¿Es la misma canción que hemos oído en youtube? La respuesta: Sí. Parecida.
Las voces de Akon son muchas las mismas que las de la versión colgada, que asumo debe ser una demo. La versión real de Thriller 25 es más completa, y tiene algunas de las voces clásicas de Michael, y un verso de la canción original.
No parece contener ningun vocal nuevo de Michael, a diferencia de "The Girl is Mine", aunque el verso de Michael parece empezar algo "diferente" inmediatamente vuelve a la manera en que la he oido miles de veces. Puede ser que tenga algo que ver con la remezcla, o quizá lo incluyeron para darle un sonido más fresco.
En general es un track tranquilo, con un agradable acompañamiento de piano, y que podría tener unos coros extremadamente bajos de Michael, aunque es dificil de decir. "Mamma say mama sah ma ma ku sah" tiene una base fuerte, seguro que para tirar algunas fotos de la pared si lo pones a todo volumen - es un poco como un escape al sonido soul, que lentamente se evapora hacia algo que uno sólo puede describir como un track bailable.
En conjunto creo que es una gran canción, pero probablemente dependa de vuestra opinión sobre Akon. Si no os gusta Akon no os va a gustar este track, así de simple -¡una decisión que ya sé que muchos ya han tomado!
For All Time (duración: 4m4s)
"For All Time" fue filtrado hace uno o dos años, y esta versión no es muy diferente, pero es diferente. Claramente ha sido remasterizada para la ocasión, con un sonido más claro y fresco, mostrando más la voz de Michael que la original.
Contiene un puente diferente al que todos conocemos, con más voz que en la original, que es más como un corte diferente. Si ya eres fan de esta canción, entonces te va a encantar esta canción, que suena más completa, pero es aún así casi la misma.

Vamos a ver...Paul esta en el disco en la version original, donde se quito fue en el Remix.
Por ahora el contenido me gusta, lo unico que no me convence es la version de Akon. espero que como minimo Michael tambien cante con el en la cancion.
